Do you ever want to go wild, bust out of confinement, and live untamed? There’s something about wild things that entices you to think what if? and consider shucking it all to become one of the glorious creatures doing it their own way. We’re talking about the desire to live on our own terms, having it all, dropping out of the rat race… especially now that it seems kids these days are already in a rat race of their own. What does it mean to live untamed, wild and free?
In this episode:
• Commiserating over our newest sports injuries make us seem a bit ridiculous.
• Misty feels the need to go a little crazy and explore her inner wild child.
• Our life is wild enough according to Randy.
• Find out which one of us is more of a people pleaser.
• Maybe it’s restlessness, maybe it’s wanderlust, or maybe it’s mid-life crisis.
• Soiled oats??!?
• We discuss what our lives would look like in alternate realities. In all of Randy’s alternate realities, there’s a “given” circumstance.
• Once upon a time, Randy had Hollywood aspirations. He now thinks that was a bad idea.
• Be forewarned this is an Olympic year and Randy is obsessed.
• Misty wants to live a thousand lives but find out what makes her say, “I’m not that kind of girl.”
• What would have happened if Randy had just jumped in that elevator?
• There’s beauty in a gap year and taking advantage of the opportunity for adventure while young.
• Misty feels full of contradictions. Trying to figure out how she can have it all has her asking Randy, “You think I want too much?”
• Dare we go a little wild and hit the road, hacking our kids’ education, and working our way across the country?
• The allure of shucking it all for plan Z.
• It might be weird if we purchased a motor coach worth 4x our house, but we would put it to good use for “research”.
• Why must Misty’s dad hate on Airstreams?
• Most people dream about how they can play by their own rules but Misty wonders if there is an extra gene for wanderlust.
• Instead of choosing what she wants to be when she grows up, Misty wants to do it all. (She prefers the title of dilettante.)
• Learn the biggest sign that you should do things your way.
• The only way to break out of the “what will others think?” trap is to stop comparing yourself or competing with others.
• Keeping up with the Jones keeps us striving for things we might not even really want.
• Cultural programming type thing. Yeah, it’s a thing. Really.
• Phoning in Valentine’s Day + one mom’s comment helped free Misty from needing to shine all the time.
• Learning to live without competing also means letting our kids be who they are – parenting the kids we have instead of the kids we want.
• Pushing our kids to be the best at everything can often rob them of the joy of exploring, dabbling, learning, and expanding their horizons.
• We weigh the pressure to choose and specialize against the allure of experiencing all the things – at all stages of life. The rat race is now a big issue for kids; there’s so much fear of them falling behind.
• Curating more wild adventures and more freedom in our life is a priority.
• A nostalgic smell triggers a reminder that we need to bring more of that vacation feeling to our everyday lives.
• Misty wants to emulate a food blogger and is planning a Julie & Julia style experiment.
